Warwickshire wheat yields 10% down
Wheat yields have been about 10% down at Wheatcroft Farm, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and the combine had hardly been out for the past week.
“Our good run ended last Monday although we cut the last 8ha (20 acres) of Malacca at 24% moisture on Friday,” said Will Hemus. “We thought that if it had any more rain on it the Hagbergs would be destroyed.”
Also in the barn was 28ha (70 acres) of Solstice which yielded a disappointing 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre). “We would expect it to be nearer 10t/ha (4t/acre).” About 40ha (100 acres) of Einstein first and second wheats averaged 7.5t/ha (3t/acre), with Alchemy disappointing at 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre).
Mr Hemus still had 36ha (90 acres) of spring beans and 1.2ha (3 acres) of oilseed rape to cut. “The beans are not ready yet and the rape ground is still too wet to travel on,” he said. The earlier cut 97ha (240 acres) of rape averaged 3.5t/ha (1.4t/acre).
