Wet conditions prevent further wheat harvesting in Shropshire

Ground conditions were too wet for Duncan Whiteman to combine wheat at Arlescott Farm, Telford, Shropshire.

Robigus cut earlier in August yielded about 10t/ha (4t/acre) from 32ha (80 acres). It came in at 14.5% moisture

“Considering the season, it hasn’t been bad,” Mr Whiteman commented.

Some 8ha of Einstein  yielded 8.75t/ha (3.5 t/acre) at 16-17% moisture.

He said the crop “wasn’t really ready”, which meant it had been difficult to combine.

“For a second wheat it isn’t bad at all, it looks quite bold,” he added.

Mr Whiteman also had 80ha (200 acres) of Solstice still to cut, and although it was still unripe, it “looked a lovely colour,” he said. “I’ll be ecstatic if i can have 10 days of fine weather soon.”

He was pleased with current prices, having sold 300t for £103/t.
