Wet weather woes in Scotland inspire harvest poem
Farmers in Scotland, Ireland and the north and west side of England are experiencing a harvest which is every bit as bad as 2008 – if not worse.
Torrential rain is leaving crops under water and ground conditions horrendous – as the headlines on FW’s Harvest Highlights page reveal.
The atrocious conditions are very worrying for growers, but Liz Phillips of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire has decided to find humour in a crisis and has written the following poem:
Our track is a river – it’s all washed away,
I’d only just fixed it – what a waste of a day!
Our chickens are scruffy, bedraggled and wet,
The cats wanted out – which now they regret!
The sheep are un-happy – all hunching their backs,
And you can follow the horses by wet muddy tracks!
The dog shed is leaking – despite that it’s new
And our yields would be higher, were it rice that we grew!
I don’t like to whinge, moan or complain,
BUT I really would love a day without rain!!!
Are you in similar circumstances. Share your thoughts on the forum. We’d also be keen to see pictures of your terrible harvest conditions on the Harvest Highlights gallery.
