Wheat disappoints growers in W. Sussex as oats and spring barley are about to begins

Einstein wheat yields disappointed Tim Lock of Houghton Farm near Arundel, West Sussex.

Mr Lock completed 64ha (160 acres) of Einstein last week. It yielded 3 t/acre (7.5 t/ha) with 13% protein, Hagbergs of 250 and specific weight of 76 kg/hl.

He put yields at 1.25t/ha (0.5 t/acre) below average.

He said: “Yields are definitely down, but prices are significantly up.”

Also completed were 28ha (70acres) of Lioness and 28ha (70acres) of Es Astrid yielding on average 3.5 t/ha (1.4 t/acre).

Mr Lock had oats and spring barley yet to harvest and said: “We are on track to get them done by mid-August.”
