Wheat on the way at Killyleagh

Graham Furey expects to be into winter wheat by the end of the week (14 August) at Castleview, Killyleagh, Co. Down.

“I don’t think anybody around here has started wheat – but we’ve finished all our winter barley and most of the oilseed rape.”

Volume winter barley was very pleasing, at 8.6-9.3t/ha (3.5-3.75t/acre) at 17% moisture, with a decent sample.

But Saffron and Retriever were a little disappointing, at 5.6-7.4t/ha (2.25-3t/acre).

Oilseed rape, which didn’t establish well after minimum tillage following last year’s wet harvest, was very disappointing, at just 3.1-3.3t/ha (1.25-1.35t/acre).

“The Castille didn’t do as well as the Emerson or Expert. The Expert looked terrible all year, but came alright at the last minute.”

Einstein and Alchemy winter wheat were standing well and looked good, he added. “But I don’t think they’re anything outstanding.”
