Will this be a difficult harvest?

Mr Ellerbeck grows predominantly wheat on his Cambridgeshire farm,.

This year he has been particularly impressed by his Einstein variety

“It looks really really good – it’s standing very well.”

While his Robigus “is still completely green”.

Mr Ellerbeck is concerned about the weather and how this is affecting his crops. He is keeping a very watchful eye over our neighbours on the continent.

“We haven’t had a difficult harvest for years and this year will be a testing harvest for some of us.

“Yield wise this harvest is looking good, but it will be the quality that will really count.”

Mr Ellerbeck claims that his farm lies in an area notorious for orange blossom midge problems.

He has been laying pheromone traps and spraying his wheat with Dursban (chlorpyrifos) in order to get on top of the problem.

He‘s also concerned over the ever changing prices of wheat.

“The prices have been much more volatile than we could ever have envisioned.

“It’s made the market so difficult to understand.”
