Winter barley has yielded well at John Bartlett’s Upton Suffolk Farms
Winter barley has yielded well at John Bartlett’s Upton Suffolk Farms, Newmarket, Suffolk, where he grows cereals for seed.
The 9ha (23 acres) of Flagon averaged 7.9t/ha (3.2t/acre), the Pearl yielded just under 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) and the Carat made 7.4t/ha (3t/acre). “We’re on very light land so that’s good for us,” said Mr Bartlett.
Spring barley did not look so promising, but the Deben, Gladiator, Lear, Battalion and Zebedee winter wheat looked well. “We should have some cut within a week, depending on how long the rain lasts.”
