Yield Watch: Win a digital grain monitor

A digital grain thermometer pack worth around £300 is being offered to one lucky grower, who submits data to Farmers Weekly’s Yield Watch service.

The Robydome digital grain thermometer pack complete with four probes and a digital monitor has been kindly supplied by Syngenta, the sponsor of Farmers Weekly’s online Harvest Highlights coverage.

Yield Watch has already had 4,300ha of wheat yields submitted, showing an average UK wheat yield of 8.83t/ha this season.

Western growers appear to be achieving the highest yields, with growers in the south-west averaging 10.08t/ha (328ha), and those in the West Midlands and Wales averaging 9.08t/ha (585ha).

Growers along the east side of the country more affected by the dry spring are reporting yields of under 9t/ha.

Northern and Scottish growers are yet to report any yields across a significant area after their harvest has been severely curtailed by wet weather.

Solstice is just edging Gallant in yield in the survey with an average of 8.62t/ha from 668ha against 8.44t/ha (921ha). Group 2 Cordiale weighs in with 8.73t/ha (497ha), while feed wheats Oakley and Grafton are neck and neck at 9.70 and 9.71t/ha, respectively.
