Camgrain has taken in 150,000t of grain this harvest, and says quality of wheat and barley is good but yields are 10% below average.

Oilseed rape yields were average to better than average, with Castille the poorest performer and Cabernet and Dimension both doing well, said managing director Philip Darke.

Yields averaged 4t/ha (1.6t/acre), up to 4.7t/ha (1.9t/acre) in places.
 
“Rape harvest has been very drawn out, getting in the way of wheat for many growers.”

Winter barley yields in East Anglia were 10% below average, but varied according to soil type and rainfall.

Malting samples averaged 1.75% nitrogen, but were also variable, while screenings and bushelweights were pleasing, he said.
 
Spring barley yields ranged from very poor to surprisingly good, but on average were about 10% down. Malting quality was fine.
 
Wheat quality was also promising, with Solstice averaging 13% protein, 78kg/hl and 300 Hagberg.

Yields ranged from 6.5t/ha (2.6t/acre) to 9.5t/ha (3.8t/acre) – about 10% below average.

“Overall Cordiale and Solstice are both performing well, but Gallant has been a little disappointing,” said Mr Darke.

“We have not seen many Group 3 and 4 wheats yet as farmers cut the quality first in damp conditions.”
 
Oats were coming in well and were close to completion, and the first few loads of beans were now arriving.
