Yields better than expected near Winchester

Yields at Lower Norton Farm, Winchester, Hampshire, were 5% below budget, but much better than expected, according to Tom Coleman.

“Overall I’ve been pretty pleased with how everything has done – considering how it looked in May I’m amazed,” he said.

Harvest finished last Friday (August 24) – about 10 days behind last year but on par with a normal year.

The Expert and Castille oilseed rape made about 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre), while the Einstein, Robigus and Alchemy winter wheat averaged 9.1-9.4t/ha (3.7-3.8t/acre). “The Einstein made a reasonable Group 2 spec.”

Optic and Tipple spring barley harvested before the rain both made malting, at 6.2-6.6t/ha (2.5-2.7t/acre), while the last Optic combined after the rain sprouted. “But hopefully it will still make a malting sample,” says Mr Coleman.
