Yorks wheat yields down slightly

Former Farmers Weekly Barometer grower Catherine Thompson reckoned her wheat yields were slightly down on last year, but harvest progress was about normal.

So far she had cut about 73ha (180 acres) of Brompton and Alchemy winter wheat at Holme House, Holme on Spalding Moor, Yorkshire. “The Alchemy yielded quite well at about 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre), but the Brompton was disappointing at 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).”

Mrs Thompson now had 20ha (50 acres) of Alchemy to finish off, along with 53ha (130 acres) of Gladiator. “We’ve got about 12ha (30 acres) that’s been under water and is very brown and flat, but other than that it looks good.”

  • Crop: Winter wheat
  • Area: 73ha (180 acres)
  • Varieties: Brompton & Alchemy
  • Yield: 7.4-8.6t/ha (3-3.5t/acre)
