Yorkshire farmer begins OSR harvest
He’s so far combined 30 ha (75 acres) out of a total 80 ha (200 acres) with his Lexion 440 at 4.04 t/ha (1.63 t/acre) and moisture content 9%.
“This is much better than some of the poor harvests we’ve had in previous years.”
Last year Mr Almack had a very poor harvest, but decided to carry on growing Winner and he’s happy to have done so.
He said he’s had very little trouble with establishment and hopes to carry on harvesting the OSR this afternoon if it remains dry.
Mr Almack has also finished harvesting his 40 ha (100 acres) of barley.
“It’s probably the best barley we’ve ever had,” said Mr Almack.
He said his Siberia barley has had some poor specific weights but good yields while his Sequel has been the opposite with poorer yields but better specific weights.
“You couldn’t tell the difference between the Sequel and 2 row varieties,” he said.
On average the barley came in at 9 t/ha (3.64 t/acre) and a moisture content of 14% meaning there is no need for a drier.
