Applications open for NFU poultry leadership programme

Young poultry farmers and industry professionals are being encouraged to apply for an NFU programme aimed at developing the sector’s future leaders.

The NFU Poultry Industry Programme (PIP), which has run since 2012, gives participants an insight into the poultry supply chain, industry policy and the challenges facing producers.

Those selected will meet industry figures, visit businesses across the supply chain, examine issues likely to shape the future of poultry farming and participate in media training.

Applications, which close on Friday 4 September and can be submitted via the NFU website, are open to people aged 20 to 40 who are active in the poultry sector in England or Wales and are either NFU or NFU Cymru members or employed by a member.

Previous participants include producers who have gone on to represent the sector on the NFU Poultry Board.

Free-range egg producer Ryan Dakin, a former PIP participant who now sits on the board, said: “I would urge anyone to apply for the PIP – I’ve never looked back.

“As a first-time poultry farmer, taking my family farm in a new direction, it opened my eyes to the wider industry and gave me some amazing networking opportunities to learn from others in the sector and to make contacts with like-minded people.

“A highlight for me had to be visiting London and the Houses of Parliament to see the impact of lobbying.

“Through this, I have gained a deeper insight into the valued work of the NFU and am now able to proudly give back and represent producers on the national poultry board.”

Current NFU Poultry Board chairman Will Raw is also among the programme’s alumni.
