BIDDERS BATTLE FOR TOP SUFFOLK BLOODLINES

BIDDERS BATTLE FOR TOP SUFFOLK BLOODLINES

POWERFUL SUFFOLK ewes from some of the breed’s most successful bloodlines made bidders compete at a three-flock production sale at Lancaster last weekend.

The Strathisla (Robert Wilson), Cairness (Jimmy Douglas) and Perrinpit (Roger Weaver) flocks fielded a strong turnout of sheep that earned a solid trade throughout the day.

And it was an impressive gimmer from the Strathisla pens that moved the crowd into top gear to record the day’s highest call of 7500gns. Buyer Yvonne Mackintosh snapped up the gimmer, in-lamb to Deveronside Messiah and by the successful sire Glenhead The McCoy.

The potential within the deeply-bred Suffolk lines of Mr Douglas’ flock has often inspired buyers searching for some of the Cairness “magic”, and this time it generated a 5500gns call for a strong gimmer by Cairness Golden Star. She was in-lamb to the 30,000gns Stockton Savannah and heads to Eire with Tom Bailey.

Averages: Cairness – 26 gimmers ÂŁ1616 and 30 ewes ÂŁ638; Strathisla – 35 gimmers ÂŁ1158 and 23 ewes ÂŁ562; Perrinpit – 26 gimmers ÂŁ525 and three ewe lambs ÂŁ997 (United Auctions with Lancaster Auction Mart).
