Big business the bane of small farmers?

“Big business has only one concern, the making of profit,” writes Yorkshire farmer Robert Fisher in this week’s Farmers Weekly Letters section.

“If you should ever hear big business saying that it cares for the environment or animal welfare, it is because it believes that this attitude will lead to more profit. Buyers, processors and large retailers are not looking to destroy dairy farmers; they just try to get the best price.

“Farmers demand a fair and honest price, but in big business there is no such thing. There is only price.

“The market economy is about greed; it is about the big and strong bullying the small and weak. Dairy farmers have to face these facts. No one is going to come to the rescue. Farmers must save themselves.”
