Bluetongue vaccine released by DEFRA

Bluetongue vaccination should begin in the high risk area of England tomorrow (Thursday 1 May) after DEFRA secretary Hilary Benn approved the release of the first batch of vaccine earlier today.

The first batch of 1m doses of vaccine, available only in 20ml bottles, are being released to wholesalers today and should be delievered to the first vets early tomorrow morning.

Urging farmers to vaccinate as soon as possible, Mr Benn said the success of the disease control and vaccination strategy would ultimately depend on the indsutry itself. “The message is clear. Don’t hesitate vaccinate.”

The second batch of vaccine, 2m doses available in 50ml bottles is expected to be released to vets within a few days.
