British cheddar wins gong at World Cheese Awards

Isle of Arran extra mature cheddar won gold at the World Cheese Awards 2013 in Birmingham.

The creamery, owned by First Milk, won a “Super Gold” title, ranking its extra mature cheddar above other gold category cheddar winners at last month’s ceremony.

“It is a huge honour to receive the top cheddar award,” said Paul Murray, head cheesemaker at Isle of Arran Creamery. “Our employees and local supplying farmers take great pride in the cheese we produce and it’s fantastic to get this recognition.”

The annual World Cheese Awards is part of the BBC Good Food Show, which received 2,700 entries from more than 30 countries this year.

Isle of Arran cheddar is made from milk produced by grass-fed cows from the island. First Milk is 100% owned by British farmers and generated revenues of £530m in the 2012-2013 financial year.
