British egg producers need level playing field

The EU must ban exports of eggs from countries using conventional cages after 1 January next year, according to farming minister Jim Paice.

Speaking at the Royal Cornwall Show  he said it was essential that British egg producers were competing on a level playing field when it came to welfare standards. And while all British producers would be complying with a ban on conventional cages from next January, some producers in other countries may not.

“What matters is that the ban is in place across Europe – there should be no derogation for other countries. Our producers deserve protection for their investment, and must not be undermined by imports from those counties that have failed to put the regulations into place.”
