British Lamb Week kicks off to help crisis-hit farmers

Butchers, restaurants and pubs are getting ready to promote high-quality British lamb for a week to help struggling sheep farmers.

British Lamb Week is running from Tuesday 1 September and thousands have already pledged their support.

The grassroots campaign aims to get shoppers more excited about lamb and wants producers and the public to cook with it, sharing pictures and messages on social media.

Lamb prices have collapsed this year due to a mix of brutal global factors – so the week hopes to inject a surge of domestic demand.

One of the founders, sheep farmer Rachel Lumley, has secured support from traders in Cumbria and Northumberland where she lives.

Support is now spreading further across the country.

On Facebook, Rob Rattray Butchers in Aberystwyth said it had promotions for £2/kg-off running on lamb all summer and has reported soaring sales.

North Somerset butchers Bakers of Nailsea is offering rolled and stuffed shoulders of lamb on offer.

The British Lamb Week initiative is being run through a Facebook page and event.

On Twitter there is a @LoveBritishLamb account. Farmers and the public can show their support with the hashtag #BritishLambWeek.
