Farmers offered 100 free ATV training places

The Farm Safety Foundation has announced a UK-wide bursary offering 100 fully funded, Lantra-accredited training courses to farmers of all ages.

The new scheme, launched during Farm Safety Week (21-25 July), covers the entire cost of ATV training and includes a high-quality Logic helmet for each participant.

Training topics range from pre‑ride inspections to advanced manoeuvres and terrain navigation.

The ATV Bursary aims to improve farm safety following a rise in fatal ATV accidents, which claimed the lives of seven people in Great Britain in the 2024-25 financial year.

Stephanie Berkeley, manager of the Farm Safety Foundation (aka Yellow Wellies), said: “ATVs are essential tools on many farms, but they can also be incredibly dangerous when used without proper training.

“By launching this bursary, we’re removing one of the key barriers – cost – and giving anyone working on farms the opportunity to learn how to use these machines safely and confidently.

“We’re doing this in memory of those who have tragically lost their lives in ATV incidents, for the safety of today’s farmers and for the generations who will follow in their footsteps.”

Staying safe

Clegg Bamber, Lantra’s head of communications, added: “At Lantra, we hear, sadly, all too often of people suffering serious injuries, and sometimes fatalities, due to riding on an ATV.

“Developing people’s knowledge and skills will ensure that they remain safe when using ATVs across farms, reducing serious injuries and fatalities.”

This bursary launch offers 100 fully accredited training slots matched with a local Lantra provider, making the courses accessible and convenient.

The initiative builds on the foundation’s broader efforts to improve farm safety through education, behavioural change and innovation, following successes such as its VR eye-protection experience at Lamma 2025.

The scheme is open for applications.

Essential ATV safety tips

Across the UK, thousands of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) play a vital role on farms and estates, thanks to their versatility.

But with more powerful machines comes increased risk. Staying safe means understanding your vehicle and its limits, and completing proper training.

During Farm Safety Week, Can-Am off-road vehicle manufacturer BRP is focusing on promoting ongoing education and responsible riding to reduce accidents and protect operators:

  • Read the Manual Always start by thoroughly reading your vehicle’s manual. Know the maximum towing capacity, load limits, safety precautions, and recommended maintenance schedules.
  • Pre-ride inspections Before every ride, check your ATV or SSV for any mechanical issues, including tires, brakes, lights, and fluid levels.
  • Wear proper PPE Always wear a helmet, boots, gloves, long trousers, and a protective jacket to minimise injury risks.
  • Complete training Take advantage of available in-person or online training courses. These provide critical knowledge on risk management, practical riding skills, and navigating various terrains safely.
  • Practice controlled riding Learn how your vehicle handles different surfaces and slopes to prevent rollovers or loss of control.
  • Stay updated Keep up with the latest vehicle technologies and safety standards through ongoing training and refreshers.
  • Respect load limits Never exceed the vehicle’s specified towing or carrying capacity, as overloading can lead to accidents.
  • Ride responsibly Avoid risky behaviours such as speeding, sharp turns at high speed, or riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
