Lantra launches new chainsaw safety campaign

Farmers and land-based workers are being urged to treat chainsaws with the seriousness they demand, as Lantra launches a major new safety campaign following a sharp rise in chainsaw-related injuries.

The new initiative, called Respect the Chainsaw, highlights, the potentially fatal risks of using a chainsaw without proper training or personal protective equipment (PPE).

It comes as new NHS data reveals that 3,144 people have attended A&E departments in England, Scotland and Wales due to chainsaw-related injuries over the past 10 years, with incidents increasing since 2020.

“Chainsaws are dangerous machines, training on how to use them is essential, and PPE is non-negotiable,” said Clegg Bamber, head of communications at Lantra.

“We know that chainsaws can cause life-changing injuries within a split second. Sadly, sometimes these injuries become fatal.”

Lantra is particularly concerned about the growing number of untrained users purchasing chainsaws from supermarket middle aisles, online marketplaces and DIY stores without adequate knowledge or preparation.

Mandy Maynard, head of industry partnerships for forestry and arboriculture at Lantra, added:

“Training and protective equipment are important when handling a chainsaw. PPE can mean the difference between a close call and a catastrophic injury. It’s not an add-on but a necessity.”

As part of the campaign, Lantra has released a new educational film fronted by professional arborist James Bingham, covering safe handling techniques, the dangers of kickback, and how PPE can prevent severe injury.

Whether working professionally or tackling storm damage at home, the message is “chainsaws demand respect”.
