Ian was the driving force behind the Open Farm Sunday initative, a national event that annually opens the countryside up to a whole new audience and promotes farming in an accessible way.

Over 400 farms held events on the third such event in June 2008, inspired by Ian’s simple idea of getting farmers to “recognise the importance and significance of reconnecting with the consumer”.

He beat off stiff competition from chef Clarissa Dickson Wright, newspaper columnist Janet Street-Porter and chairman of the Federation of Yorkshire Shows, Les Wake to claim the honours in this category.

It’s the latest in a series of accolades for Ian, who was also named Farming Champion of the Year at the Farmers Weekly Awards in 2007.
