Holstein herd rides the dairy boom

In line with the recent blockbuster trade for dairy cows, the dispersal of Mr and Mrs David Jewell’s commercial Holstein herd at Durston, Somerset, saw 46 lots make over 1000gns and 15 head reach more than 1500gns.

The top price of 1600gns came for a second calver still giving nearly 40kg after a January calving. Buyer was neighbouring farmer Robert Rowe.

He also gave 1520gns for a young cow while a three times 11,000kg sixth calver by Supersires Showboy made 1020gns.

Even a seventh calver sold for 1020gns with in-calf heifers to 950gns.

Averages: 104 cows and heifers £1002 and 10 in-calf heifers £897 (Greenslade Taylor Hunt).
