New location for Cumbrian cheese factory announced by West Lakes Dairy Park

West Lakes Dairy Park, the cheese business set up by Dutch entrepreneur Ronald Akkerman, has announced a new location for its proposed £70m cheese factory.

It will be built at Kingmoor Park near Carlisle, Cumbria, with construction set to start next summer.

Kingmoor Park chairman Brian Sowcroft said, as the owner of a working farm in the Lake District, he we was delighted to be welcoming the development.

Existing buildings at the site would be used for cheese cutting and packing from the spring, said Mr Akkerman.

The new site was chosen after another site in the county at Lillyhall, near Workington, was deemed unsuitable.

Although planning permission had already achieved, WLDP decided to relocate after discovering Studsvik, a Swedish company, wanted to process nuclear waste nearby.

WLDP has also revealed how much it will be paying for milk.

Suppliers will receive an average milk price of 27.44p/litre for October. This would be a guaranteed minimum until the end of the year, said Mr Akkerman.

Milk will be brokered until the Kingmoor Park factory opens.
