Nuffield Carbon Farming Conference aims to answer carbon footprint questions

What is it?


The Nuffield Carbon Farming Conference aims to explain the impact of farming practices on climate change and identify opportunities for farmers to reduce their carbon footprint.


Four specialists who have been undertaking research in this field for some time will be the main speakers at the event.


Topics covered will include land-use options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the implications for the uplands. Case studies of carbon stewardship will also be demonstrated. The conference will also look at opportunities for farmers to profit from anaerobic digestion and biomass production.


A trade exhibition in an adjacent hall will be open to delegates.


Who are the speakers?


Chris Pollock is the former research director of the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER) Aberystwyth. He is studying options for reducing the release of greenhouse gases in UK Farming, and will explain how this can be achieved.


David Hugill is a hill farmer from North Yorkshire, and ex-chairman of the NFU North Riding and Durham region. He will look at the management of the uplands, and how appropriate farming techniques can make a difference.


Jiggy Lloyd is an independent consultant as well as a partner in a farming business in North Lincolnshire. She will use case studies to show how much carbon is released at farm level, and how farmers can reduce their carbon footprint.


Julian Morgan is chairman of 7Y Services, a provider of business services to rural clients, and will talk about energy production from agriculture. He will focus on the production of compost as well as generating energy from wastes.


Where and when is it?


The conference will be held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on 30 April, 9am to 5pm.


Who is organising it?


The event is being orgnised by Nuffield Farming Scholarships, which offers scholarship awards to applicants aged 23-45, the Frank Arden Memorial Trust, and Fusion Events which is responsible for the Precision Farming Event, UKGrain, and Go-Till events among others.

A booking form is available to download on the conference website (www.thecarbonfootprintofbritishagriculture.com). Some tickets are still available, so ignore the 11 April deadline.The £30 fee includes entry to the exhibition, morning coffee, buffet lunch, afternoon tea and an exhibition programme and guide.
