Grant to create low-cost holiday accommodation in Kent

Farmers in Kent are eligible for a grant of up to £30,000 designed to increase the amount of low-cost holiday accommodation along the North Downs Way National Trail.

A £60,000 grant scheme is being offered to businesses that can offer places to stay that would be attractive to walkers, hikers and riders, costing a maximum of £40/night.

The scheme aims to attract more walkers and cyclists to the area of outstanding natural beauty, as they can travel to the region by train, but need affordable places to stay on their journey along the trail.

Grants of £3,000-£30,000 are available to farmers, landowners and existing hospitality offerings, on or within 5km by foot or cycle of the Kent section of the North Downs Way.

Grant organisers are keen to receive applications for unique accommodation, such as camping pods and bothies, barn conversions, and all-season “nearly wild” camping with basic services including toilets and showers.

Year-round accommodation

The accommodation should ideally be available year round, or between February and October as a minimum, and should focus on the needs of walkers and riders, rather than visitors arriving by car.

For example, priority will be given to applications that include secure storage for bikes and/or a drying room for boots and clothes.

Applicants are also encouraged to make provision for guests with mobility problems and hearing and sight loss.

Rooms in a domestic dwelling, summer-only accommodation, tents, buying land or buildings, staff costs, soft furnishings, general repairs and contingency, and fixtures and fittings will not be eligible for funding.

The scheme is a collaboration between North Downs Way National Trail, the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Kent County Council.

Catherine Bradley, Kent Downs AONB European project development manager, said: “We believe everyone should be able to experience all that the beautiful North Downs Way has to offer, regardless of age, ability or affordability.

“The scheme provides a fantastic opportunity for businesses to create something not only new and unusual, but also accessible to a range of different guests – some of whom might not have considered this type of trip before.”

The closing date for applications is 31 August and they will be dealt with on a first-come, first-served basis.

Projects must be completed by 31 January 2023 and be ready to launch the same year.
