Red Ruby bull sets record at Devon breed society fixture

A RECORD OF 7600gns was set for the Devon Cattle Breeders” Society at the recent show and sale at Taunton, Somerset.

And taking the championship was a bull that combined some of the breed”s most illustrious bloodlines.

Challenge Brigadier weighed 805kg and was consigned by Wellington-based breeder John Gilson. He proved a convincing title winner under judge Pauline Barker of Efford Down.

Mrs Barker, who has bred the last two champions at this event, said: “He is everything a Red Ruby bull should be – big, substantial and naturally fleshed. A free-moving meat machine with a docile temperament.”

West Country breeder Peter May beat off competition to take Brigadier for his Clannaborough herd.

Collecting the reserve ticket was Whitefield Conqueror from Somerset breeder Messrs Heywood and Hurd. Brian and Angela Coward claimed Conqueror at 2500gns for their Leawood herd.

A string of young bulls from G Dart & Son peaked at 5000gns for Champson Admiral. He heads for the successful Atlantic herd of Greville Vernon in the Cotswolds (Greenslade Taylor Hunt).
