Ringside at Carmarthen Livestock Centre, Wales

A larger entry of 112 store cattle resulted in a sharp increase in prices at last Thursday’s (10 January) sale, with a great number of beef-bred stock forward. Steers averaged £829.60, with heifers at £753.81 – £307 and £221 up on the previous week, respectively. A Hereford steer topped the day at £1,235, with a British Blue taking the best heifer price of £1,065.


The 85 barren cows averaged 104.53p/kg, or £687 a head, and peaked at 166p, or £1,200 gross. Two fat cattle went for 164p and 177p/kg, respectively.


In the sheep lines, hoggets averaged an SQQ of 119.14p/kg, with standard weights topping at 145p/kg. Seven in-lamb ewes sold from £42 to £64, and averaged £60.86 apiece.
