Sheep and prime bulls met a flying trade on Monday (4 March), with about 600 hoggs, 150 ewes and 16 cattle going under the hammer. Texel cross hoggs commanded the day’s top price of 232p/kg, with plenty of Continental hoggs fetching 190-222p/kg. Overall, hoggs averaged 182p/kg, with cast sheep selling to ÂŁ122 apiece.
Adam Day, managing director of North West Auctions, said there were plenty of top quality sheep forward. “It looks like the export market is slightly stronger, and with the better weather there are fewer sheep on the market,” he said.
A small but good quality entry of bulls averaged 194.92p/kg, with 10 bulls topping ÂŁ1,000 apiece, and the ÂŁ2/kg barrier broken on six occasions.
