Ringside: Firm trade at Cumbria store cattle sale

Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria Harrison & Hetherington‘s spring show and sale on Monday (7 March) proved a great success, with 600 show cattle catalogued. The champion and reserve animals, both young Limousin cross heifers, sold for £1700 – the day’s top price – and £1070, respectively.
“Trade for all classes of store cattle was tremendous,” said auctioneer Mark Richardson. “Both big finishing cattle and longer-term grazing cattle were very good to sell, with one of the biggest crowds of purchasers seen for some time.”
Breeding cattle sold to £1900 for a Limousin heifer and calf, with many others exceeding £1700 amid overwhelming demand. Prices for cast and over 30-month cattle were the dearest for some time, averaging 118.91p/kg for beef cows and 106.42p/kg for dairy.
