Ringside: Store cattle to the fore at Thainstone
Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 1,222 store cattle at last Friday’s (8 November) auction at Thainstone Centre, Aberdeenshire.
Bullocks averaged 241.4p/kg – 1.8p down on the week, with a pen of 268kg Limousin crosses taking the top price of 298.5p/kg.
Heifers averaged 227.2p, and topped at 336.5p, while bulls levelled at 279.4p and peaked at 366.1p/kg. Young and weaned calves topped at £560 a head.
In the sheep section, 4,920 head went under the hammer, with store lambs selling to £88 apiece. Ewe lambs reached £84, with a Suffolk ewe leading the sheep from the islands at £70.
Mule gimmers topped the breeding section at £125, with a Suffolk ram lamb reaching £440. Feeding ewe prices were £16.51 dearer on the week, averaging £62 a head.
