Ringside: Strong cattle trade on Orkney

A strong entry of 640 store cattle met an excellent trade at Monday’s (29 March) sale, with grazing cattle falling short of buyers’ requirements. Approximately 258 heifers averaged 181.3p/kg, selling to a near record price of 452.2p/kg. Realising £2600, the 575kg Limousin cross was sold to a local buyer.

Steers averaged 192p/kg and reached 238.1p/kg for a British Blue cross. Top price per head went to a 575kg Limousin cross steer, which went under the hammer at £1130.

Over-30-month cattle also sold well, peaking at 146.8p/kg for a 620kg Charolais steer, and £1150 a head for an 845kg Aberdeen Angus cow. A small sale of 10 prime cattle peaked at 178p/kg for a 645kg Charolais heifer.
