Scots abattoir looks for buyer

A new £4m state-of-the-art abattoir in the north of Scotland has gone into administration due to intense competition and rising costs.

Caithness Beef and Lamb in Wick was built in 2009 but was only operating trial production runs.

The joint administrators, Iain Fraser and Tom MacLennan of RSM Tennon, are looking for a buyer for the 1,300sq m plant, which has four employees.

“We are selling a virtually new plant that could be brought into production relatively quickly and easily,” said Mr Frasier.

“The plant took three years to design and build, and features some of the best slaughtering and food processing equipment available. The administration represents an outstanding opportunity for an existing meat or food processing business to instantly acquire additional capacity.

“Alternatively, the facility could appeal to an entrepreneur that sees an opportunity to launch a new abattoir and branded meat processing business. We would urge interested parties to make contact with us as quickly as possible.”
