Supermarkets accused of snubbing dairy industry crisis event

The Farmers Union of Wales has accused two major supermarkets of snubbing an event arranged to discuss the dairy industry crisis.

The union invited Tesco and Morrisons to send representatives to a meeting at this week’s Denbigh and Flint Show, which the FUW described as “a genuine attempt to allow local farmers to discuss their very serious problems with supermarkets and processors”.

While South Caernarfon Creameries and Dairy Farmers of Britain accepted the two retailers refused.

“Farmers are extremely disappointed by the negative attitude taken by these supermarkets,” said Gareth Jones, the FUW’s county executive officer in north east Wales.

“Consumers are paying enough money to keep everyone in business – it is just not making its way back to the farmer.”
