Welsh livestock producers hope to reopen abattoir with a new co-operative

Three north Wales livestock producers are hoping to reopen the Cwmni Cig Arfon abattoir at Caernarfon by persuading fellow farmers to invest at least ÂŁ500,000 in a new co-operative.

“We are just three ordinary farmers who believe it is very important to have a local slaughtering facility,” said group spokesman Gwynfor Roberts, who launched fundraising at the Anglesey Show on Tuesday (15 August).

The abattoir, which was the only one killing cattle in north-east Wales, closed for the second time in March.Shortly afterwards the Cwmni Cig Mon plant at Llangefni also stopped trading.

If the trio succeed the new company will be called Cig Cibyn.
