Cow mattress keeps animals comfy

Dairy cow comfort has come under increased scrutiny in recent years as farmers look to get the best from their animals and supermarkets take a keener interest in where milk comes from.

There are various bits of kit on the market designed to improve cow welfare, the latest of which is the Superfoam Mattress system. The new mattress – made by Bucks-based Malc Elder – has proved successful during a 1,000-cow, nine-month US trial and has replaced waterbeds and sand on many large units across the pond, according to the company.

The core is engineered from body-hugging bounce-back memory foam, which is said to provide maximum cushioning and protection for hocks, knees and other vulnerable areas. It should also maintain its shape over longer periods and is covered by an easy-to-clean, non-abrasive waterproof rubber coating.

The SuperFoam Mattress System is priced at £88 per cubicle, which includes installation and delivery.
