10 auctioneers to embark on novel fundraising ‘dash’

Ten auctioneers from Greenslade Taylor Hunt at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Somerset, are embarking on a charity fundraiser with a difference next Tuesday (28 July).

Setting off in pairs from the mart, the five teams will compete in the Sedgemoor Auction Dash to see who can travel the furthest in a 12-hour period with just £20 in their pockets.

No pre-arranged lifts or use of own vehicles will be permitted. However, teams can use as many different modes of transport as they like, with each different vehicle adding an extra 25 miles to the total distance travelled.

All 10 participants have witnessed the effects of cancer on colleagues, family or friends, so are aiming to raise vital funds for both Macmillan Cancer Support and for the Derek Mead Health Room, located at the market.

One of the auctioneers taking part is James Wotton, based at Ivybridge, but who can also be found at Sedgemoor on Saturdays selling calves and fodder.

He will be travelling with colleague Osian Richards, competing as Team Woosh.

As well as having a family member currently undergoing cancer treatment, Mr Wotton will be mindful of Greenslade Taylor Hunt managing partner Rob Venner, who has previously had a brush with prostate cancer.

“We want to raise funds for Macmillan, but we are particularly keen to improve the services at our own market health room, to increase the availability of cancer screening for our trading farmers and hauliers,” said Mr Wotton.

He added that he did not want to give too much strategy away, but noted there is a lorry park at Sedgemoor market…

The teams are:

Andy Clements and Russell Thomas

Paul Ashton and Rob Stone

Tom Mellor and Rob Baker

Ryan Doble and Jamie Batt

James Wotton and Osian Richards.

“There are no prizes for the winning team – apart from the ‘gloating factor’ – but there will be a prize for a randomly-chosen supporter taken from the winner’s sponsorship page,” Mr Wotton explained.

Teams can be supported via their individual fundraising pages listed above.
