‘Everyone knows each other and everyone mucks in when it comes to campus events and socials’
University of Nottingham
I’m in my final year studying a BSc(hons) in Agriculture at the University of Nottingham.
The agrics are found within the School of Biosciences, which is based on the Sutton Bonington campus – the “farm” campus.
Nestled in the Leicestershire countryside, the campus is around 30 mins from the main campus in Nottingham. To some, this would be their worst nightmare, but to those living on campus it’s the best place to be. The nature of the campus means literally everyone knows each other and everyone mucks in when it comes to campus events and socials.
The fact that the campus is smaller also encourages people who wouldn’t usually be brave enough to stand up and represent others, be it in the Guild, a society or academically. I’ve found myself President of the Agricultural Society and course rep for Agriculture – roles I would never have dreamt of putting myself forward for two years ago, being one of the quieter members of society.
The Agricultural Society is one of the biggest societies on campus and attracts students from all degree backgrounds showing just how important agriculture is to the campus as a whole – not just to those who are studying it.
The course itself is highly flexible and can be tailored to your specific interests which I found really appealing. Modules include highly scientific subjects such as molecular pharming (which was actually really interesting!) to more practical subjects such a Rural Business Management and Livestock Production.
When it comes to downsides, there are relatively few. The incredibly sticky floor in the bar isn’t great and the aftermath of the Rugby “welcome party” is fairly grim, but with regards to academia, the workload is very reasonable and although there is not much hands-on practical farm experience within the modules, it is available through the Agricultural Society.
When I was applying to uni, I took a “Sutton Bonington or nowhere” approach and it certainly hasn’t let me down!
