Farmers’ choir lands golden buzzer on Britain’s Got Talent

A group of farmers has captured the nation’s attention after turning a prime-time audition on Britain’s Got Talent into a stirring showcase of rural life – and securing a place in the live semi-finals in the process.

The Hawkstone Farmers Choir, made up of more than 30 farmers and agricultural workers from across the UK, gave a spine-tingling performance of Elbow’s uplifting anthem “One Day Like This”, which aired on ITVX and ITV1 on Saturday 21 March.

As their voices built to a powerful crescendo, the audience rose to its feet, and judge Amanda Holden, visibly moved, pressed the golden buzzer, sending the group straight through to the live semi-finals.

Viewers quickly took to social media, describing the performance as “powerful”, “authentic” and “a voice for rural Britain”.

The choir was brought together by Jeremy Clarkson, whose work on the Amazon Prime TV series Clarkson’s Farm has highlighted the challenges of modern agriculture.

What began as a simple idea to unite farmers has evolved into something far more meaningful, particularly at a time when the sector faces mounting pressures.

Farmers across the UK are dealing with looming inheritance tax changes that threaten the future of family farms, volatile markets, and steep rises in fuel, fertiliser, and energy costs.

Persistent labour shortages, frustration over post-Brexit trade deals, and competition from cheaper imports produced to lower standards only add to the strain.

For many, farming remains a solitary profession, with long hours and limited opportunities for connection.

It is in this context that the choir’s performance resonated so strongly. Beyond a musical outlet, it has become a support network, fostering camaraderie and highlighting the growing need for mental health awareness in rural communities.

By taking to a national stage, the choir has highlighted the realities of farming life – the long hours, isolation, and day-to-day pressures that often go unnoticed.

Golden moment

For the members of the Hawkstone Farmers’ Choir, the golden buzzer was more than a step forward in a competition.

The moment – met with hugs, laughter, and tears – reflected the sense of connection the group provides its members and brought wider attention to the challenges facing rural communities.

Buckinghamshire farmer and choir member Richard Heady told Farmers Weekly it was “incredible to be part of”.

They are now preparing for the semi-finals, which take place later this spring.
