Photo of the Week: New combine cuts early winter barley
One of the first photos in our Harvest 2025 photo gallery was this lovely view of the winter barley harvest at Rigsby Farm in Lincolnshire.
While the US was celebrating 4 of July Independence Day, contractors at Rigsby Farm were busy with a very early barley harvest – and with a brand new combine, to boot, picked up from the dealer just an hour before working on the crop.
The photo was sent in by Paul Read, who heads up the 110ha third-generation family farm. He says the fourth generation are looking keen – intriguing!

The farm is mainly arable with grassland rented out for sheep grazing. It grows oilseed rape, barley, wheat, sugar beet and oats – depending on the rotation.
The farm also has three holiday cottages and two Wild With Consent locations.
Paul says: “The early barley harvest was on our heavier land and survived the drought enough to yield 8t/ha. We just managed to get it into the barn before overnight rain came.”
