Photo of the Week: Spring drilling progresses well in Kinloss
Fine April weather has allowed spring drilling to make good progress in Kinloss, Moray, at Newton of Struthers.
In the photo, taken by Claire Rhind, farmer and contractor Grant Rhind is sowing spring barley in one pass with a Fendt 728 and 6m Lemken Solitaire.

“We have been lucky to get on well with the sowing,” says Grant’s mother, Claire Rhind.
“We are about halfway through the spring barley and then we will move on to green cover crops and first-cut silage,” she adds.
Newton of Struthers is a mixed farm, and the family also run an agricultural contracting business.
The arable land is all over to spring barley, grown for the malting market and supplying local distilleries.
On the livestock side, the farm runs pedigree Aberdeen Angus and Limousin cattle, and pedigree Blue Texel sheep.
“Our family are all involved on the farm,” says Claire. “Our sons Graeme and Grant work full time on the farm, and daughters Rhona and Maria help out when they’re not at their own jobs.”
Everything is sown with the business’s three Lemken drills, allowing the family capacity to get their own crop in the ground as well as their customers’. “It’s a short weather window,” admits Claire.
