FW journalists triumph with awards win

Farmers Weekly journalists have triumphed in the Guild of Agricultural Journalists awards.

Livestock editor Sarah Trickett and deputy arable editor Mike Abram both won categories in the prestigious competition.

Sarah took the Grassland Yara Livestock award with her article on a step-by-step guide to maize assessment.

Mike’s piece focused on blackgrass control and won the Arable section of the competition, also sponsored by Yara.

The judges citation on the article said that the piece threw new light on an extremely important topic for many arable farmers – how to cope with increasing levels of herbicide resistant blackgrass.

“This piece relayed in depth original research by Farmers Weekly, Savills and Rothamsted Research showing how cultural control methods could mitigate the effects of failing chemical control on blackgrass populations, crop yields and margins,” the judges said.

“The article was very well written and relevant. It will provoke plenty of thought among the many farmers who consider cultural control options to be too expensive or impractical and who, until now, have had little financial information on which to base their judgement.”
