Midlands mart move delayed

PLANS TO relocate the town centre market at Uttoxeter, Staffs, have been delayed after planners expressed concern that the removal of non-agricultural auctions could impact on local traders.

East Staffs Borough Council‘s position leaves operator Bagshaws little option but to rethink the development of an out-of-town market at Strumshall on a 5ha (12.5 acre) site, initially planned for autumn this year.

Bagshaws partner Norman Tweddle said that ESBC‘s stance was over-zealous. “We are talking about moving antique and furniture sales from the town centre when livestock auctions move.

“In their place the old site would be redeveloped with possibly a supermarket or other retail units – we would see that as enhancement.”

Planners believe changes could affect Uttoxeter‘s “vitality and viability”, according to an ESBC spokesman.
