Open Farm Sunday breaks attendance record

Open Farm Sunday attracted more than 200,000 visitors to British farms, breaking previous attendance records.

Organisers LEAF said that 365 farms took part in the event on 9 June, with farmers reporting a 10-20% increase on last year’s figures.

Caroline Drummond, chief executive of LEAF, said farmers had now welcomed over one million visitors on to farms since the day the initiative was launched in 2006.

“It couldn’t happen without all the hard work of farmers and their friends, family and helpers. To them and to all our sponsors and industry supporters, we would like to say a huge thank you,” said Ms Drummond.

Farm minister David Heath showed his support for Open Farm Sunday, by attending an event in his constiuency of Frome, Somerset.

“Open Farm Sunday is a fabulous opportunity for the public to show their appreciation for British farmers and to see at first hand all that goes into producing the food we eat,” he said.

“It’s important for people to understand more about how vital sustainable farming is, and how our farmers play a key role in caring for the countryside.”

LEAF also conducted a survey of visitor opinions on the event which recorded a 99% positive result.
