PHOTOS: City artist looks for on-farm inspiration

For farmers, cutting wood usually involves an axe, chainsaw or log splitter. But for artist Jonathan Ashworth it’s rather more precise.

Jonathan creates striking prints from wood – cutting and engraving intricate designs into its surface, inking it and carefully printing it on to paper.

The themes in Jonathan’s engravings are broad. As a London-based artist, many of them explore aspects of urban life, but the time he spent in Edinburgh studying fine art also engendered a love of the countryside and the great outdoors.

Apples, trees, leaves, rural paths and a female wood chopper all feature in his portfolio, but he’d like to go even further and make some engravings with a much stronger agricultural focus.

He’d like to explore farming, environmentally friendly food production and seasonal growing cycles, but as he explains, authenticity is key.

“I’d absolutely love to visit farmland in order to depict modern farming practices without an idealised or nostalgic feel. So if you feel like hosting a resident artist for a day or two then please get in touch and in payment I’ll produce a little something for your wall!”
