Rsabi campaign celebrates Scotland’s older farmers

A new initiative honouring the vital role of older people in Scottish agriculture is being launched this week by rural charity Rsabi.

Titled Ploughing On, the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution’s campaign celebrates the dedication, wisdom, and life-long contribution of senior figures in farming and crofting.

It comes as many older people in rural communities are reporting increased anxiety about the future – particularly over the effect of the government’s proposed inheritance tax (IHT) changes due to come into force next year.

Backed by agricultural organisations across Scotland, Ploughing On will run throughout the winter, sharing stories, memories, and reflections from senior members of the farming community.

Perthshire farmers Douglas Johnston and Douglas Sinclair, with 172 years between them, are helping launch the campaign this week.

“Inheritance tax changes, expected in April 2026, are putting unexpected additional pressure on farming families,” said Carol McLaren, chief executive of Rsabi.

“Very sadly, some older farmers are describing feeling they are a liability or a burden on their farming business and family.”

She added: “Agriculture can be a lonely business at any age, but those in their more senior years can be particularly vulnerable to the impact of isolation, especially during the winter months.”

Festive lunches

To support community connections, Rsabi will encourage local volunteers to organise festive lunches and will establish a network of Ploughing On groups.

The charity also plans to issue official certificates recognising exceptional contributions to farming and will release a series of videos showcasing the stories of older agricultural workers.

Rsabi is urging everyone in rural areas to look out for older neighbours this winter. “A visit, a phone call, an offer of help, or even just a smile can really lift the spirits of someone who is struggling, and make a bigger difference than you can imagine,” said Ms McLaren.

Rsabi’s free, confidential support is available 24/7 by calling 0808 1234 555 (calls won’t appear on phone bills) or via the confidential webchat at www.rsabi.org.uk.

Farmers Weekly is inviting readers to share personal tributes and photographs celebrating the contributions of older farmers across the UK to their families, farm businesses, and rural communities. Please send your submissions to: philip.case@markallengroup.com
