Cornish schoolboy launches dairy business aged 13

A Cornish teenager has turned his ambition of becoming a dairy farmer into reality by launching his own milk business at the age of 13.

Charlie Sawle, from St Agnes, has established Sid’s Dairy at his family’s 162ha Beacon Cottage Farm, producing and selling fresh dairy products using milk from his Jersey cow, Clare.

Although the family farms beef cattle, Charlie has long been determined to work with dairy cows.

His interest began at the age of six when he received his first calf.

After saving for three years, he bought Clare, who was born in April 2023.

“I love milking and it’s so satisfying to see the milk and cream in the fridge at the end of the day,” he said.

The venture reflects the enthusiasm of the next generation of farmers, with Charlie balancing school commitments while running a small dairy enterprise supplying local customers.

During term time, Charlie milks Clare every weekday after school before pasteurising the milk on the farm and producing a range of dairy products.

Sid’s Dairy, named after Charlie’s nickname, sells whole and semi-skimmed milk, double cream and Cornish clotted cream through its on-farm shop.

Charlie has completed the food safety certification needed to process and sell dairy products.

“Starting Sid’s Dairy has been a dream come true. I love working with Clare and being able to produce and sell our own dairy products.

“Jersey cows produce very rich, creamy milk, so Clare’s milk is perfect for Sid’s Dairy,” he said.

The business has attracted support from local customers keen to back a young farmer producing dairy products from the family farm.
