Leighton Buzzard YFC celebrates 90 years

Almost 350 people gathered to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Leighton Buzzard Young Farmers’ Club over the May bank holiday weekend.

Members past and present celebrated the club’s milestone anniversary at an event on Sunday 26 May hosted by the Murrell family at Whitwell Farm, in Long Marston, Tring.

They enjoyed live music, a meat and salad buffet, a bake sale and a disco.

The event raised just over £1,300 for East Anglian Air Ambulance, the club’s chosen charity for the year.

Club chairman Jemma Flitton also handed out trophies from the Bedfordshire YFC rally the week before, where the club had been the overall winner.

Trophies were awarded for sections such as cookery, tug of war, livestock, main ring and equine.

Winners included Christina Rawding, Ruby Sear, Will Ludgate, Maddie Knightley, Alena Murrell, Jess Faulkner, Oliver Forsyth and Esme Jones, with the overall rally cup being awarded to Jonnie Brown.

Leighton Buzzard YFC is part of the Bedfordshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs, welcoming members aged 10-28.

This month, Farmers Weekly will be celebrating its own 90th anniversary, including a special commemorative issue out on 21 June.
