SAYFC halfway to ‘Big Build’ fundraising goal

Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs (SAYFC) chairman Jillian Kennedy has outlined progress on the organisation’s ambitious “Big Build” campaign, revealing £800,000 has now been raised towards a £1.6m target to build a new national centre.

Speaking at the NFU Scotland conference today, Ms Kennedy said SAYFC has spent 88 years evolving alongside Scottish agriculture, supporting young people across rural Scotland.

She said attracting and retaining young talent in rural industries is becoming more challenging, making the organisation’s role increasingly vital.

“From Shetland to [mainland] shore, we provide a positive social network and essential life skills and opportunities for both personal and professional development for our members, who ultimately will be the future of our rural industries and communities,” she said.

The Big Build campaign follows the demolition of SAYFC’s former centre, with plans to create a modern, fit-for-purpose facility.

Ms Kennedy highlighted her personal effort behind the fundraising, describing her own “climb challenge” to demonstrate commitment to the project.

“I decided I would climb 56 Munros – one for each year of the old building – across 16 days,” she said.

“I walked 310km over 122 hours of walking… took 516,000 steps and climbed more than 72,000ft.”

Ms Kennedy thanked supporters including Energy Scotland, individual donors and businesses, and acknowledged Scottish government backing of £98,000. She said the campaign is now at its halfway point.

“In matching our efforts, we have now raised £800,000,” she said. “This is starting to sound pretty doable.”

She also promoted upcoming Burns suppers in the West and East, encouraging further support, and urged former young farmers to reflect on the value the organisation brought to their lives.

“What are these skills, experiences and relationships worth to you?” she asked.
