17,500 Euro top for Roscommon Simmentals

Trade for Simmental sires at Saturday’s breed society sale at Roscommon hit E17,500 when Irish breeders offered a selection of the country’s finest genetics.

Leading the trade was Curraheen Whiskey from David and Gillian Wall, Dublin. Whiskey is an embryo transfer bred son of Hockenhull Maverick out of Raceview Misty Jade, a Raceview King daughter. Taking this one home after a bidding war between Irish, Scottish and Northern Irish breeders was John Connaughton for his Ballybane herd, Co Meath.

Taking the second top call of 5100E was Celtic Wiseman from Angela and Gerard Brickley, Co Laois. This January 2008 born son of Carraheen Tyson is out of a homebred dam by Titan and had been performance tested at Tully and is in the top 1% of the breed in Ireland for suckler value and beef carcass figures.

Next best call at 4000E was Clonagh Voom Sammy from Garrett Behan’s Co Loais-based herd. Born in November 2007 Voom Sammy is by Marblehill Liam and out of a homebred dam by Dirnanean Jacob and sold to Robert and Richard Rodgers, Portglenone, Northern Ireland for their Hiltonstown herd.

At 3800E was Broomfield Wrancies Lad from Paul McArdlea, Monaghan. This one is also by Dirnanean Jacob and stood reserve champion calf at the North Eastern Club show in 2008 and sold to James Whyte, Louighrea, Co Galway.

And then at 3500E John Stone, Co Cork sold Milton Wanderer. By Salisbury Challenger and out of Milton Hilary he sold to Denis Macauley, Co Down.

It was also a succesful day for the Walls among the females when they sold the top price heifer Curraheen Wichita for 3100E. Also by Raceview King and out of imported heifer Blackford Siskin, this one was snapped up by Maura Loftus, Co Mayo.

Second top in the heifers was Clonagh Vesta from Garrett Behan, Co Loais. This one is by Hockenhull Maverick and out of homebred dam Clonagh Hycinth and sold to new breeder Aidan Holahan at 2750E.
